Colleen Barry/ Bio
B. 1981, Colleen currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. A student of the National Academy of Design, the Harlem Studio of Art, the Hudson River Landscape School, and the Water Street Atelier, she has been the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards. As a student, she exhibited her work at the National Academy of Art, The National Arts Club, the Cork Gallery in Lincoln Center, and Frost and Reed Gallery in London and New York.
While attending The National Academy of Design, Colleen studied independently with Ghanaian painter Sam Adoquei. In 2004, sculptor Greg Wyatt awarded her the Newington-Cropsey Award, which sent her to Italy to study the Italian masters. Upon her return home, Colleen began a two-year study under Andrea Smith at the Harlem Studio of Art in New York City.
In 2008, Colleen began a four-year course of study with the painter Jacob Collins at the Water Street Atelier in New York City. It was here that Colleen immersed herself in the study of human anatomy, figure, and portrait painting.
Colleen resided at the American Academy in Rome as a visiting artist for three months in September, 2011. Afterward she traveled extensively throughout Europe, copying Old Master paintings in the great museums of Rome, Florence, and Paris.
